AUGUSTA, Ga. – What has been a transcendent year for Clayton State women's basketball senior guard
Taneria Wilson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) was justly rewarded on Friday, March 6 as she was named the Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and garnered All-PBC First-Team honors at the league's annual banquet in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Â
Not only does her All-Conference selection extend an incredible 16 year stretch with at least one player being named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team, it is the first on the First-Team since
Yishica Sims following the 2014-15 campaign.
Â
She becomes just the third Laker to take home Defensive Player of the Year recognition and the first since back-to-back honors by Shacamra Jackson capped four straight years from 2010-14. Tanisha Woodard claimed the award in 2010-11 and 2011-12 and the five total selections account for nearly half of the 11 honors since the league established it in 2009-10.
Â
Wilson has been a force to be reckoned with all year long as she has averaged 16.3 points, 3.6 steals, 3.1 assists and 4.4 rebounds while starting all 29 games. This year she has been named PBC Player of the Week three times (Jan. 20, Feb. 17, Feb. 24) and became the first individual in program history to earn it in back-to-back weeks.
Â
There was good reason for her to win those awards as she set the program record with 36 points, along with 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists, at rival Columbus State (2/19) and tied the program record with 10 steals, along with a then near record 34 points with four assists and five rebounds at Francis Marion (1/8).
Â
Beyond program marks, Wilson is one of the top defensive players in the country as she sits No. 3 in total steals (105) and fourth in steals per game. In the PBC she leads all players in both of those categories as well as games played and started and her 474 points is second in the league. Her 960 minutes is third overall and 16.3 points per game is tied for third most.
Â
Individually, she posted 24 games in double-figure scoring (13 of at least 20 points) and 19 games with at least three steals and has been a key factor in the Lakers current 11 game win streak. The latter is the second longest active streak in the Southeast Region, during which she has delivered averages of 18.6 points, 3.8 steals, 2.5 assists, 4.8 rebounds.
Â
This year's selection marks the 16
th consecutive year that Clayton State has had at least one player named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team and the 18
th year out of the last 19. In their 25 years as a member of the league they have had a player so honored in 19 of those years for a total of 35 selections.
