MORROW, Ga. – In response to the Coronavirus pandemic Clayton State Athletics has announced the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019-20 season effective immediately. This follows the announcement by the Peach Belt Conference Board of Directors earlier in the day that the league will be cancelling all remaining spring sports for the campaign.
Â
The sports that are most directly impacted by this decision for the Lakers are men's golf and men's and women's outdoor track & field and the roughly 50 student-athletes that comprise those teams. Each was in the championship portion of their seasons.
Â
Yesterday, with the announcement by the NCAA that all winter and spring championships would be cancelled, Clayton State women's basketball closed the year after reaching the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 14
th time in 16 seasons.
Â
Both actions were taken not only in an abundance of caution but in being good stewards of the communities that Clayton State and fellow PBC institutions are a part of.
Â
"This was a very difficult decision for the board to make," said PBC Commissioner David Brunk. "The safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and fans is our top priority. Given the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic that we are all facing, the board agreed that this was in the best interests of everyone involved."
Â
A fluid and unprecedented event in the history of all levels of college athletics, it is expected that further information will be made available from the NCAA in the coming weeks, particularly on issues relating to student-athlete eligibility stemming from the cancellation of their seasons by that organization.
