Clayton State 2018-19 Season in Review: Women’s Basketball

MORROW, Ga. – With the close of the 2018-19 campaign, the Clayton State Sports Information Office is producing a Season in Review for each of the program's 11 sports.
 
That series began with the fall season and has progressed to the winter before concluding with the spring campaigns. Each week reviews will be released on Mondays and Wednesdays until concluding with the final spring sport on Monday, July 8 and the Athletics Season in Review on Wednesday, July 10. Today we take a look back at the 2018-19 Women's Basketball season.

Conference Finish: 4-of-12 (L, 70-60 vs. No. 22 North Georgia – PBC Semifinal)

2018-19 Season in Review
  • Finished 21-10 overall, 16-6 Peach Belt Conference
  • Qualified for 13th NCAA Division II Tournament in 15 years behind 13th 20-win season
  • Went 17-4 between December 31, 2018 and March 6, 2019. Three of those four losses came to fellow NCAA Tournament qualifying teams and two nationally ranked opponents
  • Knocked off No. 21 Wingate, 56-54, in second game of season. Followed 67-66 season opening victory over Anderson, a team that would go 30-3
  • Nearly upset No. 3 Carson-Newman on the road before dropping narrow 90-86 decision
 
Individual Achievements/Honors
  • Madison Newby and Taneria Wilson named to 2018-19 All-Peach Belt Conference Third-Team
  • Newby averaged 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game while Wilson hit marks of 11.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.9 assists
  • Velencia Johnson averaged 8.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals and went for a career-high 23 points in the PBC Semifinals against No. 22 North Georgia
  • Newby topped 20 or more points five times, including career-high 27 in PBC Quarterfinal victory over USC Aiken
  • Wilson dropped career-high 26 points in 23 minutes at No. 3 Carson-Newman. Was one of three games of 20 or more points, including 23 points in overtime victory at Flagler. Scored 10 of those in the extra session
  • Jhade Hayes and Kietta Saunders named to the 2018-19 Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball All-Academic Team
