Clayton State's Green and Jackson Sweep PBC Track & Field Athlete of the Week Honors; Second Time in Program History

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Clayton State women's track & field earned a sweep of the Peach Belt Conference Athletes of the Week for just the second time in program history as freshman Kiara Green (Ty, Ty, Ga.) picked up Field honors while sophomore Chaviya Jackson (Albany, Ga.) earned the Track recognition as announced by the league on Tuesday, March 26.

Competing at the Emory Invitational (3/22-23), a meet featuring teams from all three levels of the NCAA as well as the NAIA and from across the country, both Green and Jackson featured prominently in helping the program to an impressive 2-of-31 finish.

Jackson delivered not only in multiple events but at a high level in each to anchor Clayton State's efforts. Those were headlined by a 1-of-25 finish in the 4x400-meters where she teamed with junior Jasmine Radford (Lawrenceville, Ga.), sophomore Corta'Nasha Mutcherson (Savannah, Ga.) and freshman Asia Love (Riverdale, Ga.) for a time of 4:01.57.

She followed with her top individual performance at 4-of-48 in the 400-meters (59.00) with a 5-of-69 outing in the 200-meters (25.67) not far behind. Jackson closed out one of the best days of her young career as she was part of the 4x100-meter relay that finished 6-of-26 (48.25) and also included junior Nia Elmore (Hinesville, Ga.), Radford and Mutcherson.

For Green, despite being a freshman, this is not uncharted territory for her as it is her second such honor in three weeks. Continuing an impressive inaugural campaign she produced three strong efforts at Emory.

Facing 52 other competitors in the discus, she delivered a third place finish as she hit a personal best distance of 38.95-meters. She would add another PR as she placed 21-of-55 in the shotput, landing a distance of 10.64-meters. Green then closed out the weekend with a 36-of-49 effort in the hammer (29.14).

"Chaviya and Kiara had a productive meet in helping the team to a second place finish at the Emory Invitational," said head coach Mike Mead. "Chaviya scored in four events for us while Kiara had a huge personal best in the discus. Super proud of their efforts!"

Overall, Clayton State has had 13 combined honors on the women's side between seven individuals since the league began sponsoring outdoor track & field in 2013. Green becomes just the third individual to win PBC Field Athlete of the Week multiple times, joining Jessica Matthews (5) and Brianna Heilsnis (2).

Jackson is just the third Laker ever to collect the award on the track side of things. Not only is it her first such honor, she is the first women's track athlete to be recognized since Maia Kuhnen was on May 4, 2016. With Matthews winning it for field that same week, that is also the only other time that Clayton State has swept the PBC's weekly awards.

A total of four individuals have claimed 10 field honors for the Lakers while three different student-athletes account for the three track honors.
