MORROW, Ga. – Coming off of a thrilling shootout victory in the quarterfinals, Clayton State (8-6-2, 5-5-1 PBC) women's soccer makes its return to the Peach Belt Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2014 as they matchup against No. 2 Seed/No. 18 North Georgia (15-2-1, 9-1-1 PBC) on Friday, November 15. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Augusta, Georgia.
Â
The Lakers have qualified for all but two PBC Tournaments since the league began sponsoring women's soccer in 2000 and have appeared on nine of the last 10 brackets. In those previous 17 appearances, they have won a total of 12 games, including their first game of the tournament six times (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2013, 2014).
Â
Twice they have won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship, doing so in 2005 and 2013. In 2005 they defeated Columbus State 2-1 in overtime and knocked off Georgia College in 2013. In the latter the teams went to overtime tied at 2-2 before Clayton State eventually pulled it out on penalty kicks by a 4-2 margin.
Â
The Lakers are
8-10-3 all-time against the Nighthawks, dating back to the first meeting on September 17, 2003. Coming off of that 0-0 tie at Laker Field, Clayton State would win the next five through 2007 before UNG put together a 7-2-1 stretch that was snapped in 2015. That day, the Lakers knocked off a No. 3 ranked North Georgia team by a 2-1 score in overtime on October 14.
Â
UNG posted a 5-0 decision in Dahlonega, Georgia on October 26, 2016 and a 5-1 victory at Laker Field on October 25, 2017. Clayton State notched an impressive 1-1 tie against a No. 15 Nighthawk squad on October 15, 2018 in Morrow and barely fell 1-0 on the road on October 23, 2019 in the most recent meeting.
Â
The winner of the semifinal matchup will advance to the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Championship, also in Evans, Georgia. They will play either No. 1 seed Flagler or No. 4 seed Columbus State on Sunday, November 17. Game time for that is set for 12 p.m..
