Clayton State Athletics Unveils New OrthoAtlanta Athletic Training Room With Ribbon Cutting

MORROW, Ga. – More than two years after the largest athletics-based donation in program history, and following an expansive six month project, Clayton State Athletics proudly unveiled the new OrthoAtlanta Athletic Training Room with a ribbon cutting and festivities on Monday, November 26.

"It was not a very hard case to say that our student-athletes deserve better," said Clayton State University President Dr. Tim Hynes. "Our trainers deserve better. Our coaches deserve better and quite frankly our doctors deserve better. This is thanks to a whole lot of partnerships, a patient athletic department, three different athletic directors that had a vision that this could come to fruition and my colleagues in Facilities that took that vision and turned it into a reality. This is a facility we can all be proud of."

With luminaries on hand from both Clayton State and OrthoAtlanta along with student-athletes and members of the Athletics Department, the Lakers showcased a brand new facility that will benefit all involved.

"Completing projects like this benefits so many groups on and off campus but no one will benefit more from this than our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Ryan Erlacher. "Clayton State Athletics is always looking for ways to better serve our student-athletes and improve their overall experience. The OrthoAtlanta Training Room will allow them to receive better accommodations, better care and prevention of injuries and they'll be able to take tremendous pride in their new space. Being able to offer a State-of-the-Art training room is a significant step forward for our Department."

Previously operating out of a space at least three times smaller than the new area, and one that had existed since the inception of the program in 1990, Sports Medicine and Clayton State student-athletes will now be able to reap the rewards of OrthoAtlanta's generous $60,000 donation from the Fall of 2016.

"For those of you that had never been to our athletic training facility before, [pointing] from Tim Duncan over - your sitting in it," said Head of Sports Medicine Alicia Roane. "This was our spot and there was hardly room. Along with the space improvement, we were also able to go from hand-me-downs to customized and top notch equipment that will allow us to provide much better services to our student-athletes and stay current in the ever-changing realm of athletic training."

One of the largest physician-owned orthopedic and sports medicine practices in the greater Atlanta area, OrthoAtlanta's relationship as Clayton State's official sports medicine provider dates back to the beginning of the program. Their donation represents not only the single largest in the history of Laker Athletics but also the largest in that organization's history.

"Clayton State Athletics has always been so welcoming to me, trusting, and deserves this," said team physician Dr. Timothy Ghattas. "Alicia Roane and her staff have worked in all kinds of crazy conditions during the transition and have done a fantastic job. She does more with less and you deserve this just as much as the University does."

Among the features of the new OrthoAtlanta Athletic Training Room are two full size offices for the Sports Medicine staff, a hydro area, ample amount of space, multiple treatment tables and a pair of taping stations. The brand new training area was made possible through OrthoAtlanta's donation and as part of the overall Campus Core construction plan.
