MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Clayton State (11-10, 6-6 PBC) could not withstand a sustained offensive push as Montevallo (13-7, 7-6 PBC) coasted to a 98-69 victory in an NCAA Division II men's basketball game on Monday, January 30.

Redshirt-senior forward
Alfonso Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds and two steals while graduate forward
Jaumonee Byrd (Douglasville, Ga.) finished with 13 points. Junior guard
Dantez Bennamon (Goose Creek, S.C.) added nine points and five boards while redshirt-sophomore guard
Marquise Clark (Miami, Fla.) chipped in with seven points and a career-high four assists.

The Falcons raced out to an early 9-0 lead behind a pair of three-pointers before Clayton State cut it to 13-10 by the 13:56 mark. At that point UM answered with a 23-9 run over the next 9:19 to stretch their advantage to 36-19. The Lakers would cut into that margin with a 9-3 run but would find themselves down 44-29 at the break.

That lead would balloon to 52-33 over the first 2:16 of the second half and would get no better the rest of the way. With the score at 66-47 with 11:33 left, Montevallo used a 25-17 stretch to make it 91-64 before closing out the 98-69 victory.

Javonte Douglas exploded for a game-high 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead Montevallo while Jamaar Taylor finished with 26 points with a 9-of-10 performance from the field. He added seven rebounds and three assists and Kevin Kelly chipped in with 14 points. Talan Whitaker rounded out the top performers with nine points and seven caroms.

The Lakers return home to take on Georgia College on Wednesday, February 1. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's contest at The Loch.
