HAMPTON, Ga. – On a sunny 90-degree day, nearly 100 individuals played in the 2016 Clayton State Laker Club Golf Classic at Crystal Lake Golf & Country Club in Hampton, Ga. on Monday, August 29. All proceeds of the event benefit the ongoing educational pursuits of current and former Clayton State student-athletes.
 
Set as a best ball scramble for the format, the Classic also featured a number of special events and prize opportunities. Dixon Golf sponsored a closest to the pin contest on Hole No. 2 and four holes had Hole-in-One contests.
 
Allan Vigil Ford sponsored a four day/three night vacation on Holes No. 2 and No. 17, a Ford Mustang on Hole No. 5 and head-to-toe golf apparel on Hole No. 17 while Heritage Cadillac sponsored a 2015 Cadillac on Hole No. 17.
 
Also featured was a silent auction as well as a raffle for various prizes and wedge competition. Teams took to the course in a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. following a meal sponsored by Sodexo.
 
Among the day's highlights was a dinner sponsored and provided by Rocky's Café and Pizza followed by the awards ceremony at close of day. Each of the top three finishing teams received various prize packages.
 
Winning the 2016 Clayton State Laker Club Golf Classic was the Diversified Fire & Safety foursome of Joel Miller, Alex Shammas, Mike Austin and former Laker golfer Alex Vetnar.
 
In addition to Vetnar, some of the greatest players in program history were in attendance as well. PGA professional and three-time All-American (2007, 2008, 2009) Will Wilcox took time away from his schedule as did Fredrik Lindblom, who was an All-American in 2014.
 
"We had a great time out here at the 2016 Laker Club Golf Classic," said Tim Duncan, Clayton State Director of Athletics. "It's a wonderful time and it benefits our student-athletes and their scholarships for summer school and fifth year. It was a great turnout with 19 teams and we had a great time along with some great prizes. We're already looking forward to next year!"
