MORROW, Ga. – In their second-to-last match of the season, Clayton State (5-13, 2-9 PBC) dropped a 6-3 decision to Lander (8-9, 2-9 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Saturday, April 16.
Â
Playing with just five players, the Lakers entered the match down 2-0 before taking the court for doubles play. The combination of senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) would get them on the board with an impressive 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot before junior
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) and sophomore
Alina Ageichik (Minsk, Republic of Belarus) fell in a 9-7 marathon at No. 3.
Â
Trailing 3-1 entering singles play, it would once again be Pavel leading the way, this time with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 1 over Ivanka Mocic to cut it the deficit to one. That would be as close as they would get, however, as the Bearcats took the matches at No. 4 and No. 5 to secure the victory. Following a 6-1, 6-1 by LU's Yurika Ono at the No. 2 position, Drozdova pulled out a 5-7, 6-0, 10-4 decision at No. 3 to reach the final margin of 6-3.
Â
The Lakers wrap up the 2016 season tomorrow, Sunday, April 17, when they host No. 50 USC Aiken. First serve is set for 11 a.m. in Morrow, Georgia.
