Defending NCAA Division II National Champion No. 4 Armstrong State Next Up for Clayton State

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (3-8, 1-5 PBC) returns to Peach Belt Conference action with one of the toughest matches on anyone's schedule as they host NCAA Division II National Champion No. 4 Armstrong State (13-1, 4-0 PBC). First serve is set for 1 p.m. on Friday, March 25.

The Pirates, winners of eight national championships, come into the match with a narrow 5-4 loss to St. Leo (3/5) as the only blemish on their record. Among their highlights are six wins over Division I programs Jacksonville State (9-0 on 2/26), Nicholls State (4-0 on 2/27), George Mason (5-0 on 3/9), LIU Brooklyn (7-0 on 3/12), Navy (7-0 on 3/15) and No. 3 North Carolina (6-3 on 3/16).

Clayton State is back in action after downing Alabama Huntsville by a 5-4 score on March 20. In that outing, juniors Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) would earn the deciding victories. Drozdova would put together a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles before Mendes put the match away with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

All-time the Lakers are 1-25 against ASU since the first meeting on March 28, 1998. Since their lone victory, a 5-4 decision on February 17, 2001, the Lakers have dropped 22 straight matches, including by a 9-0 score last year on March 7.
