Mendes Delivers Winner as Clayton State Downs Alabama Huntsville 5-4

Boxscore

MORROW, Ga. – Taking on a team that has played almost as tough a schedule as they have, Clayton State (3-8, 1-5 PBC) notched a 5-4 victory over Alabama Huntsville (6-7, 5-1 GSC) in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Sunday, March 20. That win snapped a four-match losing streak and comes over a club with a Division I win.

Junior Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) and senior Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) got things started with a dominant 8-1 victory over Sarah Stearman and Madison Gulick at No. 1 doubles before the Chargers evened the score with an 8-3 decision at No. 2. It would be sophomore Alina Ageichik (Minsk, Republic of Belarus) and junior Carolina Monterrubio (Mexico City, Mexico) that would give the Lakers back the lead as they came out on the right end of an 8-6 score at No. 3.

Holding that 2-1 margin, Ageichik would post a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles but UAH answered right back with back-to-back wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to deadlock at 3-3. That would be the last time they would have a shot, however.

Junior Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) stuck out a hard-fought 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 decision over Aniek Remmerswaal at the No. 3 spot to put the Lakers back ahead and junior Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) would put the match away with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 battle with Gulick. Alabama Huntsville would get the last point on the board, a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 6, but that would only bring the match to its final margin of 5-4 after the matter was decided.

The Lakers begin one of the toughest two match sets any team in the country could face as they host both No. 1 and defending Division II National Champion Armstrong State (12-1, 4-0 PBC) and No. 2 BYU-Hawai'I (6-0, 0-0 PacWest). They will host ASU at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 25 and the Seasiders at a special 10 a.m. start on Monday, March 28.
