MORROW, Ga. – Taking on the NAIA National Runner-Up, and 2014 National Champion, Clayton State (2-8, 1-5 PBC) could not match No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett (8-1, 0-0 AII) as they fell 9-0 in a non-conference women's tennis match on Friday, March 18.
Â
The Grizzlies would sweep doubles play with 8-1 and 8-0 victories at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles and close it out with an 8-3 decision over senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) at the top spot.
Â
It would be the top and bottom of the order that would secure the match victory for GGC in singles action. A 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 6 would be the first half of that while Pavel battled the No. 1 player in the country, Valeria Podda, before falling 6-1, 6-1.
Â
From there, the Lakers highlights would come from junior
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) and sophomore
Alina Ageichik (Minsk, Republic of Belarus). Drozdova would put up a fight against No. 5 Alyona Vasileva, eventually falling 6-1, 6-4, and Ageichik would push No. 15 Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff to the limit. She would drop the first set by a narrow 6-4 margin and fall 7-5 in the second set.
Â
The Lakers are back in action at home on Sunday, March 20 when they host Alabama Huntsville. First serve is set for 12 p.m. in Morrow, Georgia.
