MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Beginning a stretch of nationally ranked opponents, Clayton State (1-3, 0-2 PBC) could not withstand No. 13 Georgia College (3-3, 2-0 PBC) as they fell 8-1 in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Sunday, February 21.
Following an 8-4 defeat at No. 3 doubles, the Lakers bounced back with an impressive 8-3 win by senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) at No. 1 to even the match. That would be the day's highlight, however, as GC then showed why they are one of the top teams in the country.
They would win the next seven matches, beginning with an 8-1 decision at No. 2 doubles and a 6-3, 6-1 final at No. 5 singles. Pavel would challenge Camille Clausse-Pujo at No. 1 before falling 6-3, 6-2 but the Bobcats would secure the match with 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 victories at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
Mets would drop a 6-1, 6-4 decision at the No. 2 spot before junior
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) pushed Macy Polk at No. 3. She took the first frame 6-3 before dropping the second set by that same score. It would take a marathon effort for Polk to pull out the third set by an 11-9 decision and wrap up the match at 8-1.
The Lakers are back in action at No. 8 Columbus State (4-1, 2-0 PBC) on Saturday, February 27. First serve is set for 12 p.m. in Columbus, Georgia.
