All-American Marti Bartis Drills Pair of Goals in Clayton State’s 3-1 Victory Over Union

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior midfielder Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) picked up right where she left off as she notched a pair of scores in Clayton State's (1-0, 0-0 PBC) 3-1 victory over Union (0-1, 0-0 GSC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Thursday, September 3. The game was part of the Christian Brothers University Tournament.

Coming off an All-American season in which she scored 15 goals, Marti Bartis wasted no time, driving home an unassisted goal just 3:20 into the game to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. That would hold up through the rest of the half, but the Bulldogs would respond just into the second frame.

With just 2:29 gone by in the half, Kayleigh Patterson found Kelsey Wilkes for the tying goal. That would be all they would get. Just over four minutes later, Marti Bartis answered back with her second goal, also unassisted, before senior midfielder Rachel Schmidt (Snellville, Ga.) joined in with one of her own at the 53:21 mark.

That burst would be all they would need as Clayton State's defense would shut down the Union offense for the final 36 minutes to secure the 3-1 victory.

Wilkes and Patterson had a goal and assist, respectively, to pace UU while Emily Waggoner started in goal and went 59:09, surrendering all three goals, before giving way to Kristen Francis. The latter played the remaining 30:51 without allowing a score.

Marti Bartis led the way for the Lakers with a pair of scores and Schmidt had the only other goal. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Charlotte McCormack (Wexford, Ireland) went the distance, allowing just the one goal and making a save to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Following a day off tomorrow, Clayton State wraps up its time in Memphis, Tenn. with challenging matchup with Christian Brothers (1-0, 0-0 GSC) on Saturday, September 5. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (EST) as part of a the final game of the CBU Tournament.

NOTES
The two scores by Marti Bartis is the second most in her career, trailing only her hat trick against Pfeiffer (9/12) last season … in little more than a year, she now has 16 goals and 41 points as a Laker.
