MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Taking on a team that went 13-6 and made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, Clayton State (1-1, 0-0 PBC) could not overcome a late score as Christian Brothers (2-0, 0-0 GSC) notched 2-1 victory in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 5.
After nine minutes of scoreless play to start the game the Buccaneers would take a 1-0 lead at the 9:09 mark as a result of a Clayton State own goal. The Lakers defense would recover from the miscue and refuse to allow another score.
That would pay off nearly 20 minutes later as junior defender
Siobhan Wilson (Essex, England) took it herself and drove home the tying goal at the 28:13 mark. That 1-1 score would hold up not only until halftime, but deep into the game.
With 17 minutes to play, Camilla Rodrigues found Connie Strini, who headed in the go-ahead goal at 83:22, giving CBU a 2-1 advantage. That goal, combined with continued strong defense would be all the 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier would need to escape with the one goal victory.
As a result of the earlier own goal, Strini and Rodrigues accounted for the only points for the Bucs with their goal and assist, respectively. Emily Wragg went the distance in goal, allowing just the one goal and making three saves to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Wilson led the Lakers with her first goal of the season and senior goalkeeper
Charlotte McCormack (Wexford, Ireland) played all 90 minutes, surrendering two scores and making one save to fall to 1-1.
Clayton State returns home on Tuesday, September 8 when they host West Georgia at Laker Field. Game time for the home opener is slated for 7 p.m.
