Clayton State University men's basketball coach
Vince Alexander announced, on Thursday, October 6th, the addition of Rashad Lewis as an assistant coach this season. Coach Lewis brings a vast array of skills and knowledge about basketball to the position.
"I am truly blessed to have Rashad join our staff," said Alexander." Rashad played for me his freshman year at USC Aiken, and he has had a tremendous career as a college basketball player. He brings great energy and a remarkable skillset that I believe will help our program move in the direction we desire. I am looking forward to what he can teach our young men on-and-off the court."
Lewis started off his collegiate career, in the 2014-15 season, playing for coach Alexander at USC Aiken where he played in 27 games and averaged 6.4 points a game. He was also second on the team with 35 steals. After his freshman season, Lewis transferred to Tallahassee Community College for the 2015-16 season where he led the Eagles to a 21-12 record and averaged 11.8 points a game in 33 games played. Also, at TCC, Rashad earned Second-Team All-Panhandle Conference honors and was selected to FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 All-Tournament Team.
From 2016-18, Lewis transferred to NCAA Division I Mercer University. At Mercer, Rashad played in all 32 games and was second on the team in steals (23) and assists (72). He saw his best game come after scoring 10 points and grabbing six boards against Oglethorpe on December 7
th, 2016.
After sitting out his senior year due to injury, Lewis again transferred to Oklahoma Baptist University where he finished his collegiate career. After sitting out the 2018-19 season, Lewis has a very successful 2019-20 season and finished leading the Bison in assists (130) and steals (30). Lewis was tied for the team lead with 12.4 points a game. He saw his best game come against Henderson State on March 8
th, 2020, in the GAC Tournament Championship as he notched 27 points and five steals. As a result of his great season, Lewis was named as a Great American Conference (GAC) All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Although transitioning from a player to a coach is quite different, the objective is still the same," said Lewis. Coaching along with people that I am familiar with, makes the transition a lot easier. Having the opportunity to work with someone who is knowledgeable of the game such as coach Alexander is exciting."
