The Lakers Defeat Christian Brothers, 2-1, at Laker Field on Sunday

Ninni Ringstad buries the match-winning goal in the 74th minute

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team wrapped up its season opening homestand on Sunday afternoon as they hosted Christian Brothers.  Ninni Ringstad knocked in a goal in the 74th minute as the Lakers took the match, 2-1. 
 
The Buccaneers opened the scoring in the first half of the match with a goal in the 18th minute.  Christian Brothers led, 1-0.  That lead did not last long.  In the 21st minute, the referee awarded the Lakers an indirect free kick and they took advantage of that.  Aniyah Vargas tapped the ball to Jessica Fidhi who sent a laser into the back of the net for the goal.  The score was deadlocked at one a side.  The Lakers had countless other opportunities.  Whether it was a free kick just outside the box or a corner kick, they could not take a lead. 




 
Regan Riddle, Ringstad, and Vargas all attempted shots in the final moments of the half but the score still stook at 1-1, going into the halftime break. The Lakers held the possession 59% of the half and Fidhi and Vargas led the Lakers with a pair of shots. The two teams combined for 12 fouls and 11 shots.

Buccaneers came out of the locker room firing as they peppered keeper Claire Smith with four shots in the first 10 minutes, but the match still stood at 1-1.  Things were quiet on the pitch until the 74th minute.  In the 74th minute, A Buccaneer defender was trying to clear the ball but her pass went directly to Ringstad, and she went top shelf and buried the ball into the back of the net for a goal.  The Lakers took a 2-1 lead. 
 
The Lakers were outshot 11-10 and 6-4 in the half but finished their opening home stand strong winning, 2-1.

  • Both Fidhi and Ringstad scored their first goals of the season.
  • Vargas has notched at least a point a game in the opening three matches as she added an assist.
