Vargas Scores in 1-1 Draw Against Lincoln Memorial

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team hosted Lincoln Memorial University on a sweltering Thursday afternoon at Laker Field.  The two teams finished deadlocked at one apiece with all goals coming in the first half. 
 



The Lady Railsplitters held the ball consistently in the opening part of the first half.  The match shifted into the Lakers' favor in the midway part of the half.  In the 27th minute, Aniyah Vargas was streaking down the middle of the field and went top shelf for her second goal of the season.  Clayton State pulled out to a 1-0 lead.  Lincoln Memorial then immediately knotted the matchup in in the 28th minute.  The Lady Railsplitters took advantage of a free kick in the nearside corner and finished for the goal.
 
The Lakers held the ball 52% of the possession in the half and finished the half deadlocked at one.  Ninni Ringstad led the Lakers with a pair of shots while the team was outshot, 6-3.  Rubie Kelley made three saves for the Lakers.

The two teams played a very even second half as neither team could gain advantage over one and another.  Claire Smith came into the match in the second half and made four saves in net.  The best opportunity for the Lakers came in the 82nd minute when Jael Bruhlmeier was streaking into the zone, but the ball was smothered by the Railsplitter keeper. 
 
The two teams finished the 90th minute deadlocked at one.  Lincoln Memorial and Clayton State combined for 13 shots in the second half.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Lakers (1-0-1) host the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers on Sunday Funday at Laker Field.  Kickoff on Sunday, September 6th is set at 3 p.m.  The first 50 fans receive a frisbee upon entry into the match.
