The Lakers Take Down Barry on Saturday Evening, 3-1

Camilo Velez knocked in a pair of goals, while Ethan Elmore added a goal and an assist

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team hosted Barry University on Saturday evening at Laker Field.  The Lakers took down the Buccaneers, 3-1, behind two goals by Camilo Velez

Barry started with some good chances to score in the first 20 minutes of the first half, but Kalle Kuisma and the Laker defense stepped up and produced stops.  The Lakers opened the scoring in the 31st minute.  Sonny Simpson was fouled in the box, and the Lakers earned a penalty kick.  Velez stepped up and saw his shot saved but he buried the rebound and the Lakers took a 1-0 lead.  Velez and the Lakers picked up the offensive intensity after that PK.  In the 33rd minute, Ethan Elmore stole the ball in the Barry defensive zone and fed the ball back to Velez who finished for his second goal of the match.  Clayton State took a 2-0 lead.

That score would hold true going into the halftime break.  Velez led the team with three shots, after he came off the bench.  Miguel Goncalves and Arttu Leivonen followed behind with two shots.  Kuisma snagged two saves.  Barry held the ball 57% of the half.

Halftime: Clayton State 2, Barry 0

The Lakers saw some good opportunities at the beginning of the second half as Lucas Schofield sent in a pair excellent shots but they were snuffed out by the Buccaneer keeper.  After Barry peppered Kuisma with shots, the Lakers extended their lead.  In the 69th minute, Adrian Lopez went down for an excellent slide tackle and fed a streaking Elmore who went top-shelf and scored his first career goal and made the score, 3-0.

Barry scored a late goal but that was too little too late as the Lakers concluded his homestand with a 3-1 victory.  The Lakers outscored their opponents 6-1 in their first two matches.
