Wagner Knocks in Pair of Goals in the Lakers Season-Opening 3-0 Shutout on Thursday Evening

The Lakers outshot the Buccaneers, 17-9

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team opened its 2026 season hosting the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University on Thursday evening at Laker Field.  The Lakers explode for three goals in the second half to shutout Christian Brothers, 3-0. 
 
The two teams were in a feeling out process in most of the first half as neither team put much pressure on the other.  The pressure from the Lakers came off three corner balls.  Sonny Simpson led the team with three shots in the first half.  Clayton State outshot the Bucs 8-3 in the first half but neither team could break through on the scoreboard in the first half.

The Lakers turned up the offensive intensity in the second half.  In the 46th minute, the Lakers scored their first goal after Camilo Velez sent in a brilliant ball into the middle of the field who found Fabian Wagner for the goal.  The Lakers led, 1-0.  After that goal, the Bucs showed some urgency offensively but was unable to break through as Kalle Kuisma snuffed out each opportunity.  The Lakers then struck again.  In the 73rd minute, Lucas Schofield sent in a corner kick from the near side.  Simpson then fed the ball to Wagner for his second goal of the match and made the score, 2-0.  Clayton State added one more goal.  In the 78th minute, Schofield was at it again and he found a streaking Arttu Leivonen who sped past the keeper for his first collegiate goal. 
 
The Lakers went onto win the match, 3-0, outshooting Christian Brothers, 19-7.
