MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team hosted the Bearcats of Lander University on Saturday at Laker Field. The Bearcats shut out the Lakers, 1-0.
The Lakers opened the match by displaying aggressive defense. Clayton State goalkeeper
Rubie Kelley made four crucial saves in the first 27 minutes of the half. Both sides traded shots midway through the half, but neither side could find a breakthrough up until the 33
rd minute, when Bearcats scored the match's first goal. Lander led 1-0.
The Lakers nearly answered when
Eva Martin fired a shot in the 40
th minute, but it was saved. The first half ended with the Bearcats on top, but the Lakers defensive playing style kept them within close distance.
Halftime: Lander 1, Clayton State 0
In the second half, Lander peppered Laker keeper
Claire Smith with seven shots and made five five saves. The Lakers pressed hard, trading shot attempts with the Bearcats throughout the second half. Both teams fought hard, showing strong competition. The Lakers saw their best opportunity to score in the 83rd minute when
Laila Ortiz-Nolan's shot was fired in and saved by the Lander keeper keeing the score at 1-0.
The match closed with Lander shutting out the Lakers 1–0.
