MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's basketball overcame a 20-point deficit in the second half but were on the wrong side of a 74-68 decision against USC Aiken on Senior Day and Homecoming. The Lakers saw
Aaron Pitts explode for 30 points and 12 boards on Saturday evening inside the Loch.
Aaron Pitts and
DJ Wright both hit threes to open the first half for the Lakers and they led, 11-4. The Pacers then surged back and knotted the game back up at 13 all. USC Aiken guard Rhyjon Blackwell made a trio of threes during that stretch. The Lakers kept leading the game into the midway part of the half as
Yannis Woods, Wright, and
Marcus Harris all hit shots. The Laker lead was 21-18.
The Pacers finished the half on a 17-6 run and pulled out to a 39-27 lead going into the half.
Dashaun Joseph hit a pair of shots during that stretch.
Halftime: USC Aiken 39, Clayton State 28
The Pacers led by 20-points three minutes into the second half at 50-30. USC Aiken started 5-for-5 from the field. Then, the Lakers started to cut into that deficit. Pitts and Wright combined for the next eight Laker points and closed the gap to 53-38. The Lakers kept up the offensive momentum as Harris and Woods then added field goals and the score read, 53-42. After a Pacer layup, the Lakers continued to score, going on a 14-3 run and made the score, 58-56 with 7:50 left in the game. The Lakers then with 3:42 left in the game erased that 20-ppint deficit and took their first lead since early in the first half at 62-61.
The Pacers retook the lead in the final three minutes of the game and never gave it up. The Lakers ended up falling in their home finale, 74-68.
