MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team kicked off Homecoming week with a 67-64 loss to Georgia College & State University on Wednesday evening.
The Lakers were trailing early in the first quarter, 6-5 and then started producing some effective offense.
Ky'Leo Worriels sparked an 8-2 run and pulled out to a 13-8 lead. The Lakers led, 15-10 after one quarter of play.
Aniya Jones supplied the early offense for the Lakers at the start of the second quarter and made the score, 17-14. Georgia College then went on a 9-0 run and led, 23-17.
Nya Young and
Jada Alston then kickstarted the Laker offense and took a 27-26 lead. Young went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and tossed in a jumper during that stretch.
The Bobcats canned a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer and took a 33-31 lead going into the locker room. The Lakers went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the quarter.

The Bobcats pulled out to a five-point lead at 38-33 to start the third quarter. Clayton State then went on an 8-3 run and knotted the game up at 41. The Lakers would not score in the final 3:49 of the quarter and trail 52-43 going into the final quarter of play. GCSU found themselves with a 14-point lead to begin the fourth quarter leading, 58-44. The Lakers then mounted their comeback. A pair of jumpers by
Jadah Waite sparked a 11-2 run and cut the deficit to 60-55.
Jasmyn Burts converted an and-one opportunity during that stretch. With five minutes left, The Lakers cut the deficit to two at 62-60 after Waite,
Kyla Greene, and Worriels made baskets.
With 14 seconds left and down four at 65-61,
Sariya Henry buried a three to make the score, 65-64. However, GCSU would bang in a pair of free throws and hold onto defeat the Lakers, 67-64.
QUICK HITS
- The Lakers broke the single-game school record for the most free throw attempts without a miss, going 11-for-11. The previous record was set in 2013.
- Burts led the Lakers with 16 points and four steals.
- Waite followed with 11 points and Young added 10 points.
- Worriels led the Lakers with 11 boards including seven on the offensive glass.
- Both teams scored 28 points in the paint and the Lakers outscored the Bobcat bench, 26-13.
