Lakers Open Season With A 77-75 Nail-Biting Victory

Tianna Dismuke buries a layup to win it for the Lakers

St. Augustine, FL — The Clayton State University women's basketball team kicked off their 2025–26 season in a competitive battle against the Hawks of Shorter University, pulling off a 77–75 win in an all out nailbiter.

1st & 2nd Quarters: From the tip-off, the Lakers brought energy on both ends of the ball. Just nine seconds in, Nya Young drove the lane and scored a layup in the paint, giving Clayton State the first basket of the game and setting the tone. The team stayed locked in, trading buckets, crashing boards, and running plays that kept the matchup tight. Jasmyn Burts, Amya Patterson, and Young all contributed key baskets as the Lakers stayed composed while the score remained close.

Halftime: Clayton State 31, Shorter University 29

3rd & 4th Quarters: In the second half, The Lakers continued to apply pressure on both ends. The team attacked inside, scored shots, and stayed in control during critical possessions. Keeping in mind that every basket was crucial, The Lakers turned the intensity up a notch. Stunningly, with less than 30 seconds left, a direct pass was thrown down to Tianna Dismuke, who floated a confident layup in the paint to give the Lakers the lead. The Lakers held on strong throughout the rest of the half securing their first win of the season.
