#16 Lakers Settle for a Draw to Conclude Opening Weekend

Jussi Gerbeding scored the tying goal in the 89th minute

MORROW, Ga. – The No. 16 Clayton State University men's soccer team concluded its home stand on Saturday hosting the Patriots of Francis Marion University.  The Lakers saw a late goal by Jussi Gerbeding and ended the match tied at one. 
 
The Patriots controlled most of the first half and took the lead in the fifth minute and made the score, 1-0.  The Patriots held the Lakers without a shot until the 32nd minute when Alex Rodriguez sent in a shot which was saved.  The Lakers saw their best opportunity come in the 40th minute when Alexis Iturria sent in a shot that was knocked away from the FMU keeper. 
 
The Patriots outshot the Lakers, 8-6, in the first half and they took a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.  Francis Marion notched 10 fouls and three cards in the first half.

The Lakers put more pressure on the Patriots in the second half.  In the 51st minute, Gonzalo LaChica put a ball on net, but his shot went off the woodwork.  The momentum of the match changed in the 63rd minute when Francis Marion's Antonio Garda was called for his second yellow and they went a man down.  The next best opportunity came in the 72nd minute as Hector Nieto, like LaChica's shot earlier, went off the woodwork.  The Patriots will led, 1-0.
 
The Lakers eventually tied the match in the 89th minute.  After the Lakers put a lot of pressure in the Patriot goal box, Mohamed Mahrous found Gerbeding in the near side box, who scored a goal. The match was deadlocked at one. 
 
The Lakers outshot the Patriots, 10-5, in the second half and settled for a draw with Francis Marion.
