Women's Basketball Falls in Final Game of Conference Challenge

Waite marked 21 points while Etaria Gibbons tossed in 16 points

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team concluded its Conference Challenge with a 66-63 loss to Anderson University on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Sariya Henry provided the early offense for the Lakers in the first quarter as she scored four the first eight points and the score were tied at eight.  The Lakers only managed three more points the rest of the quarter and they trailed, 14-11, at the end of the first quarter.  Anderson caught fire at the beginning of the second quarter as they went on a 9-0 run and led, 23-11.  Aniya Jones hit a three to end the run.  Etaria Gibbons then scored the next six points of the game and the Lakers got within three at 23-20.  At the score, 30-23, the Lakers went on a 5-0 run and made the score, 30-28. 
 
Armani Shaw and Gibbons scored points down the stretch as the two teams were tied at 34 at the half.

The two teams went back-and-forth to start the third quarter as neither team led by more than one until the 4:54 mark.  Gibbons made four of the next six Laker points at that time to make the score, 45-40.  Anderson then eventually took the lead at 46-45 with two minutes left, but baskets by India Green-Dowling, Gibbons, and Jadah Waite made the score 50-46 going into the final quarter of play.  Jasmyn Burts extended the lead to six at 53-46 to start the fourth quarter.  At the score, 55-48, the Spartans clawed back into the game going on a 17-3 run and they took a 65-58 lead with one-and-a-half left in the game. 
 
The Lakers saw baskets from Henry and Waite down the stretch but that was not enough as the Lakers dropped a close one, 66-63.

  • Waite led the Lakers with 21 points and shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
  • Gibbons followed with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
  • Gibbons also led the Lakers with nine boards. 
  • The Lakers grabbed 39 rebounds as team and scored 29 bench points.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Lakers (0-2) play in the North Georgia Classic on Friday, November 15th and Saturday, November 16th.  The Lakers play Nova Southeastern on Friday at 4 p.m. and Livingstone on Saturday at 12 p.m.
