GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team concluded its 2024 Regular Season traveling to play Lander University on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers picked their first shutout victory at Lander since 2000 winning, 2-0.
The story about the first 45 minutes was defense for each team as neither side conceded a goal. Keeper
Mauricio Uribe faced seven shots in the half and stopped four of them. On the other hand, the Lakers only fired off three shots and one of which were on frame.
Mohamed Mahrous,
Alexis Iturria, and
Fallah Johnson all notched shots for the Lakers. The two teams went into the locker room with a 0-0 tie.
Halftime: Clayton State 0, Lander 0
The Lakers turned up its offensive production in the second half. In the 51
st minute,
Alex Rodriguez sent in a corner ball, but it was kicked by a Lander defender into the back of the net for an own goal. The Lakers struck first up, 1-0. The Lakers then added on about three minutes later. In the 53
rd minute, Rodriguez fed the ball to Iturria who found Mahrous who scored the goal, moving the score to 2-0.
Lander had some good opportunities to score but Uribe held his own. The next best opportunity for Clayton State came in the 83
rd minute when
Hector Nieto's shot hit woodwork and the score remined at, 2-0. The Lakers used two second half goals to pick up a clean sheet victory over Lander.
