Lakers Advance to Championship Sunday in 2-0 Victory over Lander

The Lakers will play Flagler College at 4 p.m. on Sunday

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team played Lander University in the 2024 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Semifinals at Laker Field on Friday evening.  The Lakers clinched a berth to Championship Sunday shutting out Lander, 2-0. 
 
Both teams came out to play in the first half as both teams had chances to score early.  Fallah Johnson fired in a shot that was saved by the Bearcat keeper in the 2nd minute and Lander put a shot on Mauricio Uribe in the 7th minute of the game.  The Lakers eventually took the lead.  Off a one-touch pass from Othmane Chagour, Alexis Iturria crossed the ball into Johnson who finished for a goal making the score, 1-0.  That score would stand after 45 minutes of soccer. 
 
Halftime: #1 Clayton State 1, #4 Lander 0
 
Uribe came to play in the second half as he made four straight saves in the first six minutes  of the half and the score remained at 1-0. Lander continued to pressure Uribe but he made save after save after save and the score remained at 1-0.  The Lakers grew their lead in the 85th minute as Iturria found Alex Rodriguez who found the back of the net for a goal and made the score, 2-0. 
 
The Lakers saw phenomenal opportunities to pad their lead in the final minutes of the game as they saw shots by Rodriguez and Vic Delgado Miller hit woodwork and the post.  However, Clayton State went onto win, 2-0, over Lander. 
 
QUICK HITS
  • Rodriguez scored his ninth goal of the season while Johnson marked his seventh. 
  • Iturria notches his third multi-assist match as he grew his assist total to 13 this season. 
  • Uribe made seven, terrific saves in the match and pitched his sixth shutout of the season. 
  • The Lakers advanced to their second-straight title game. 
  • The Lakers are 3-0-1 against Lander in their last four matches.
