MORROW, Ga. – The #14 Clayton State University men's soccer team concluded their four-match homestand hosting the Nighthawks of the University of North Georgia on Wednesday evening. The Lakers scored four, second half goals and defeated North Georgia, 5-1.
The Lakers put the pressure on the Nighthawks early in the first half. In the 9
th minute, off a pair of one-touch passes from
Geo Rios and
Alexis Iturria,
Vic Delgado Miller run the cash register for the first goal of the match. The Lakers led, 1-0. Neither the Lakers nor the Nighthawks had great opportunities to connect on a goal the rest of the half as the score with 1-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
Halftime: #14 Clayton State 1, North Georgia 0
Early in the second half, the Lakers added to their lead. In the 50
th minute, Iturria sent in a shot and it was saved by a Nighthawk defender which was immediately put back by Alexis and scored his fourth goal of the season making the score, 2-0. In the midway part of the half, the Nighthawks started to pepper
Mauricio Uribe with shots, but they were all easily saved. The Lakers still were in front, 2-0.
Clayton State continued to pour on later in the second. In the 77
th minute, and off a pass from
Adrian Gallegos, Iturria bent in a ball from about 20 yards out and scored his second goal of the match and made the score, 3-0. A couple minutes later,
Wilfried Kamden joined the scoring party as he sent in his second goal of the season and the Lakers led 4-0. Kamden's goal was assisted by Gallegos and Rios off two brilliant one-touch passes.
The Nighthawks eventually got on the board in the 89
th minute after they converted a penalty kick. With 10 seconds left in the match,
Andree Jimenez served up an excellent ball to Gallegos who put the ball into the back of the net. The Lakers went onto win the match, 5-1.
