#16 Clayton State Edges Lander, 2-1, on Saturday Afternoon

Vic Delgado Miller scored his first goal this season

MORROW, Ga. – The #16 Clayton State University men's soccer team hosted the Bearcats of Lander University on Saturday afternoon at Laker Field. The Lakers took down the Bearcats, 2-1.  The Lakers have won their fifth straight match.  In that winning streak, the Lakers have outscored opponents, 11-3.

Clayton State was very aggressive to start the first half as Alexis Iturria and Gonzalo LaChica all fired in shots in the first eight minutes of the match.  The Lakers then opened the scoring.  In the 13th minute, Wilfried Kamden was streaking up the near side and then fed the ball to Geo Rios as he fired a shot past the Bearcat keeper for a goal.  Rios knocked in his fifth goal of the season as the Lakers took the 1-0 lead.

Later in the half, the Lakers added to their lead.  In the 23rd minute, Rios cut into the box and hit Vic Delgado Miller in at the far side post and finished for his first goal of the season.  The Lakers extended their lead to 2-0.

Mauricio Uribe came up big for the Lakers as he made three saves in the final 15 minute as the Lakers took a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.

Halftime: #16 Clayton State 2, Lander 0

The Bearcats started the second half bringing the pressure to the Lakers early in the second half as they fired in three shots in the first three minutes.  The Bearcats then were fouled in the box in the 53rd minute and were awarded a penalty kick.  Lander converted that chance and closed the gap to 2-1.  The Bearcats kept bring the pressure, but Uribe and the defensive unit did not skip a beat as they held Lander scoreless the rest of the way.

The Lakers played conservative soccer until the 84th minute when Kamden put a brilliant shot on frame, but it was stoned by the Lander keeper.  In the next minute, Rios sent in a shot but his shot just went wide of the net and the score stayed at 2-1.

The Lakers played strong defense down the stretch and held on to win, 2-1.
