DAVIE, Fla. – The No. 12 Clayton State University men's golf team opened play at the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regionals at Grande Oaks Golf Club on Thursday. The Lakers find themselves in sixth place out of 20 schools. Shorter University, out of the Gulf South Conference, leads the field at 12-under par.
The Lakers are leading all Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools in the 20-team field after shooting three-under par as a team. As a team, Clayton State is second in the field with 3.93 shots on the par-four holes and is tied for third in the field with 19 birdies.
Leading the charge for the Lakers is the trio of
Sam Hershoff,
Felipe Gomez, and
Nico Cabello, who is currently tied in 25
th place after all shooting 70 (-1). Hershoff and Cabello lead the group with five birdies apiece while Gomez knocked in four. After 18 holes, Cabello is tied for third in the field averaging 3.73 strokes on the par-four holes.
Following close behind is
Augusto Oliva and
Daniel Medellin. Oliva shot a first round 71 (E) and stands in tied for 38
th, while Medellin shot a first round 72 (+1) and stands in a tie for 60
th. Oliva and Medellin combined for five birdies.
The Lakers tee off the second round on Friday, May 12
th starting at 9:10 a.m. and they will be paired, again, with Nova Southeastern and the University of Tampa. Fans can follow the live results via golfstat.com!
