MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's basketball team suffered an 89-71 setback over the No. 24 Nighthawks of North Georgia at the Loch on Wednesday evening. Four of five starters marked double-digit figures for the Lakers.
A three-point play by
Travis Harper II and a three by
Brian Coffey II jumpstarted the scoring for the Lakers as they led, 6-2.
Kobie Johnson then added a three-ball and made the score, 9-2. The two teams then traded blows midway through the half. After Coffey II made a layup making the score 23-22, Lakers, the Nighthawks marked nine of the next 11 points and retook the lead at 31-25.
Ricardo Saams Jr. dropped in a layup to break that run.
Johnson was the only Laker to score in the final two minutes of the half as North Georgia took a 39-31 halftime lead.

Wes Williams, Johnson, and Saams Jr. produced the early scoring for the Lakers in the second half, but the Nighthawks still led 44-37. At the score 46-39, the Nighthawks hit back-to-back threes and extended their lead to 52-39. The Lakers tried to cut into their deficit with 10 minutes left. At the score 63-47,
Bryce Weinmunson drilled a three and
Xavier Joyner tossed in a pair of free throws which closed the gap to 63-52. The Nighthawks immediately grabbed the momentum back and went on a 10-0 run and grew their lead to 73-52. Harper II drained a three to end the run.
Coffey II,
Baqi Lecky, Joyner, and
Dudley Blackwell all hit shots in the final minutes of the game, but the Lakers came out on the wrong end of a 89-71 decision.
