DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The #16 Clayton State University men's soccer team closed out their road portion of its schedule on Wednesday evening as they took on the Nighthawks of the University of North Georgia. The Nighthawks converted penalty with 3:30 left in the match and won the match, 2-1.
The Lakers got off to a strong start as they rung the cash register for the first goal of the match. In the 3
rd minute,
Alexis Iturria fired a shot off the woodwork, got his own rebound and sent the ball into the back of the net for a goal. The Lakers went up 1-0. That score would hold true at the end of the first 45 minutes of play. The Lakers did not have much more opportunities in the half. With five minutes left in the half, Clayton State was down a man after a Laker defender picked up his second yellow of the contest.
Halftime: #16 Clayton State 1, UNG 0
The Lakers, even though a man down, still got pressure on the UNG backline as Iturria and
Wilfried Kamden sent in shots in the early going of the half. The Nighthawks scored the equalizing goal the 62
nd minute and made the score 1-1. The score remained 1-1 until the later part of the half. In the 87
th minute, a Clayton State defender fouled a UNG play in the box. As a result, the Nighthawks were awarded a penalty kick opportunity. After converting the PK, the Nighthawks took a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers dropped their second straight match as they fell, 2-1.
