PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Clayton State men's golf team closed its regular season at the Argonaut Invitational on Tuesday with an eighth place finish as
Nico Cabello turned in a career-best second-place result.
Cabello entered the day in second place and shot 1-over 73 in his final round to secure runner-up with a total score of 9-under 207. That score is tied for fourth all time in program history for lowest 54-hole total.
Earlier this season, the Chilean finished T3 at the Hurricane Invitational. His first-round 68 and second-round 66 are his second and third rounds in the 60s this season. Cabello also shot 66 in 2020-21. Individually, he finished ahead of 31 golfers who are ranked ahead of him, including the No. 2, 3 & 4 ranked individuals in Division II.
The tournament, hosted by West Florida, was played at Pensacola Country Club and featured 17 teams. Conditions ramped up for the final round as the field battled heavy rain.
No. 6 Arkansas Tech won the tournament at 7-under 857 while the Wonder Boy's Francois Jacobs eanred Medalist Honors at 11-under 205.
Of the 17 teams that competed, nine are ranked inside the top 25 of the Golfstat rankings. The ranked teams included No. 2 Lincoln Memorial (7th), No. 5 Lee University (2nd), No. 6 Arkansas Tech (1st), No. 8 Oklahoma Christian (T3), No. 9 Ga. Southwestern (5th), No. 11 Limestone (T3), No. 14 West Florida (6th), No. 16 Columbus State (11th), No. 22 Henderson State (10th) and No. 23 West Georgia (12th). The Lakers currently sit at No. 27.
Clayton State finished with a final team score of 15-over 879 after shooting 7-over for the final round. The Lakers finished ahead of three schools ranked inside the top 25.
Augusto Oliva was one of three Lakers to shoot 1-over 73 for the final round as he improved to T27.
Daniel Medellin also climbed the leaderboard with a 1-over 73 as the freshman finished T40 at 7-over.
Sam Hershoff dropped to 89th while
Javier Gonzalez finished 93rd.
The Lakers will have a week off before hitting the course for the Peach Belt Conference Championship on April 15-17. The three-day tournament will take place at St. Simons, Ga. at the Sea Palms Resort.
