EATONTON, Ga. – The Clayton State men's golf team turned in its second-straight top-five finish after closing the Bobcat Invitational with a T4 result on Tuesday.
The Lakers entered the final round in sole possession of second place but shot 10-over Tuesday and slipped back to T4. Thirteen of the 15 schools shot over par in the final round while one score was even and one was just 1-under.
The tournament, which featured 15 teams, had 10 schools that rank inside the top 25 in Division II and three of the top-five ranked programs in the country.
No. 1 Barry claimed the tournament title while No. 13 Lander finished second. No. 16 Florida Southern finished third while the No. 35 Lakers tied with No. 12 West Florida.
Javier Gonzalez jumped to T12 after shooting 1-over 71 while
Sam Hershoff added a 1-over round to the Lakers' results to finish T37.
Barry's A.J. Ewart, who ranks No. 3 in the nation, held on to win the tournament after shooting 4-over to finish a three-round score of 3-under 207.
Clayton State finished ahead of conference rivals No. 2 USC Aiken (9th place result), No. 7 North Georgia (7) No. 9 Ga. Southwestern (6), No. 15 Columbus Sate (10), No. 84 Young Harris (15) and No. 87 Georgia College (11).
The Lakers also beat out No. 4 Lincoln Memorial (8), No. 17 Saint Leo (13), No. 40 Valdosta State (12) and No. 68 Rollins (14).
Augusto Oliva led the team with an 11th place finish after shooting 3-over on the final day.
Daniel Medellin dropped to T23 while
Nico Cabello collected a T37 result.
The Lakers have an off week before heading to Florida for the Argonaut Invitational on April 4-5 in Pensacola, Fla.
