MORROW, Ga. – Trailing 58-57 in the final minute,
Jadah Waite drilled a turnaround jumper with six seconds left to give Clayton State a win over Young Harris College in Saturday's Peach Belt Conference matchup.
The Lakers were set to take the win, but a Young Harris foul with less than a second remaining sent
Taniya Patrick to the free throw line to close the game. The junior knocked down one-of-two shots to make the final score 60-58.
Wednesday's game marked the second-straight home win for the Lakers. On Jan. 26,
Audrey McElhaney drained a last-second shot to beat Flagler.
In a game that saw neither team lead by more than eight points, the Lakers saved the best for the last, scoring 17 points in the final quarter to take the win.
Timi'a Swanson led Clayton State with 19 points while McElhaney recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Swanson added six steals.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with Young Harris leading 28-27 at halftime.
The third was mostly a close quarter until the Mountain Lions used an 8-0 run to pull ahead 47-39 with just under a minute to play. The Lakers then scored four-straight to cut the deficit to four.
The two teams slugged it out throughout the fourth, but Young Harris held the advantage until the 1:38 mark. Waite sunk a basket to briefly give Clayton State the lead, but Young Harris answered right back to pull ahead 58-57.
Waite scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter.
