MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon, falling 61-60 to Augusta in the final seconds.

With the loss and a Columbus State win, the Lakers will enter the Peach Belt Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed. They will play at Ga. Southwestern on March 2. Time is TBD.

The first half belonged to Augusta as the Jaguars pulled ahead 19-6 after 10 minutes. Clayton State scored all six points in the first three minutes as the game was tied 6-6 at 7:13.

The Lakers responded in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to six points with four minutes left to play in the half. Augusta would lead 31-25 at halftime.

Jadah Waite had a team-high 17 points in the loss.

Audrey McElhaney added 13 points and six rebounds while senior Timi'a Swanson had a double-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists.

The third quarter was a battle, but Clayton State outscored Augusta 17-15 to trail 44-42 heading into the final quarter.

The Lakers took a 49-48 lead with 7:46 left to play off a Waite 3-pointer before a pair of Augusta free throws handed the lead back to Augusta. Another Waite three made it a 52-50 game with 6:44 remaining.

The two teams battled until Jessica Maye gave Clayton State a 60-57 lead with 1:20 left to play.

Augusta would then drive down the court and convert a layup with 45 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, the Lakers used all the time they had, but failed to score any points.

The Jags would advance the ball and look to score, but a Laker foul sent AU to the line. Kiera Howard sank both free throws for the win.
