MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's basketball team suffered a 73-65 loss at home Wednesday night to Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern.
Jadah Waite scored a game and career-high 25 points in 28 minutes to go along with five steals and two rebounds.
Clayton State jumped out to a 6-0 lead before GSW answered with a 9-0 run to pull ahead 9-6. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Clayton State gave the Lakers the lead, but the Hurricanes closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 16-12 after the first quarter.
The battle for fourth in the league standings has tightened up as Columbus State and Clayton State are tied with a conference record of 8-9. The Lakers are one game up on Augusta, who they host Saturday for Senior Day.
Clayton State took a 28-24 lead midway through the second quarter and led 32-31 at 1:52, but the Hurricanes hit consecutive 3-pointers to lead 37-32 at halftime.
GSW had four players score in double-digits and held a 31-19 bench point advantage.
The Hurricanes held their own in the second half and led by as many as 14 points before taking a 73-65 win.
Ga. Southwestern will take third in the league standings as Wednesday was its final regular season game.
