WISE, Va. – The Clayton State women's basketball team concluded play at the Region Challenge playing the host of the Tournament UVA Wise on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers came up short and fell in overtime, 72-65.
 
The Lakers started the game going on a 9-4 run as Diamond Swift, Taniya Patrick, and Jada Francois Lubin all scored baskets.  With under five minutes in the quarter, Laylah Davis buried a three and made the score, 16-8.  With two and half left, the Lakers ended the quarter on a 10-5 run and went into the second quarter up 27-15.  Jadah Waite and Jasmyn Burts both knocked down threes during that stretch. 
 
Francois Lubin buried a three-ball to start the second quarter for the Lakers up 30-15.  The Cavaliers then marked seven of the next eight points and cut the Laker lead to 31-22.   The Lakers and Cavaliers then traded blows throughout the middle of the quarter as both teams made their free throws.  With two minutes left, Jordan Jones tallied the final five points for Clayton State to end the half as they took a 42-28 lead going into the half.

UVA Wise came out of the break and hit their first two field goals and made the score, 42-32. After Jasmyn Burts made a bucket and extended the Laker lead to 15 at 48-33, UVA Wise went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter.  The Lakers went into the final quarter up 50-43. 
 
UVA Wise got off to a similar start in the fourth quarter as they fought back and took the lead, 53-50,  after marking the first 11 points.  Audrey McElhaney broke up the run with three minutes left after making a pair of free throws.  The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the end of the quarter as Swift and Waite both knocked down threes.  The Lakers led 60-58 with 1:30 left in the game. 
 
The Cavaliers scored the equalizing basket with one minute left as the two teams went to overtime tied at 60. 
 
In the extra period, UVA Wise took over from the tip as they held the Lakers to a pair of field goals and ended up winning the game, 72-65.
