MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State men's golf team had a very successful fall campaign in 2022. The fall consisted of a pair of top-five team finishes and three individual top-five finishes.
Currently, in the first Golfstat ranking of the season, the Lakers are No. 17 in the nation. In the poll, Clayton State is one of three Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools represented. In the fall, the Lakers played against seven schools that are ranked in the top-25.
As a team, the Lakers placed 3
rd in the Cougar Invitational and finished 4
th in the UNG Mizuno Invitational. Head coach
Hank Kim and his squad shot a season-best 278 in the first round of the UNG Mizuno Invitational which ranked tied for fifth in program history. In that tournament, the Lakers finished with a team score of 864 which is good for 10
th all-time. In all, the Lakers shot six rounds in the 60s, 12 rounds below par, and seven rounds at even-par.
Leading the team all fall was
Daniel Medellin. Medellin finished each of the four tournaments in the top-15 with his best finish being in 5
th place at the Columbus State Cougar Invitational. He also leads the team averaging 71.6 strokes a round. Following Medellin is Felipe Gomez. Gomez, who was selected as the PBC Men's Golfer of the Week on October 26
th, placed in the top-five in the final two tournaments of the season. Gomez was tied for second in the McCoy Wright Currahee Collegiate Invitational and placed third in the Columbus State Cougar Invitational. Gomez also holds the lowest round by any Laker golfer this season after shooting a 67 in the second round of the Cougar Invitational. That is good for tied for 13
th all-time. Gathering the only other top-15 finish on the team was
Augusto Oliva. The Laker senior finished in tied for 14
th place in the UNG Mizuno Invitational.
Looking at the Spring 2023 slate, the Lakers open with the GSW Hurricane Invitational on Monday, February 27
th through Tuesday, February 28
th. Later in the season, the Lakers play in the Bearcat Invitational (March 6-7), the Bobcat Invitational (March 20-21), the Tennessee River Rumble (March 27-28), and finish the season with the PBC Championships at the Forest Hills Country Club on April 20
th through the 23
rd.
