MOROW, Ga. – The Clayton State men's basketball team dropped its sixth-straight Peach Belt Conference contest Monday night after falling 79-72 to Lander University at The Loch.
Monday's game was the third in three days for Clayton State.
The Lakers jumped out to a 9-2 lead after hitting their first three shots and a pair of free throws.
Clayton State continued to build its lead and pulled ahead by 14 points after a
Kobie Johnson 3-pointer with 12:01 left to play in the opening half. Lander would stay in the ball game and erased the large deficit to five points with just under eight minutes left.
The two teams traded baskets as the Lakers led 42-39 at halftime.
Johnson and
Wes Williams each had 12 points. Williams added five rebounds while Johnson had five assists and one steal.
The second half was a struggle for the Lakers who only scored 30 points on 30.7% shooting.
After trading the lead in the first six minutes, Lander took it for good at 54-53 and used a 14-2 run to pull away and lead by 13 with 8:16 left in the game.
Clayton State mounted a comeback and closed within four points with just a few minutes left but was unable to get any closer as time ran out.
Jalen Shaw added 10 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two blocks.
Austin Hadden also had 10 points.
