MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 11 North Georgia but lost 70-61 in Wednesday's Peach Belt Conference home opener.
The Lakers led 34-32 at halftime but were outscored 21-11 in the third quarter and fell behind after UNG hit three-straight 3-pointers.
Clayton State kept it close and trailed by nine going into the final frame.
UNG entered the game ranked No. 11 in the WBCA poll and the top team in the conference. They knocked off Lander University on Saturday who was ranked No. 3 in the country at the time.
Both teams scored 16 in the fourth. The Lakers pulled within five at the 6:12 mark but couldn't do much more as the Nighthawks ran out the clock.
Hannah Wright scored a career-high 17 points while going 6-of-10 from the field.
Timi'a Swanson added 11 points and three steals while
Audrey McElhaney chipped in with nine points and career-best 18 rebounds.
As a team, Clayton State hit 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
