MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's soccer team fell 3-2 in double overtime after coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half of Thursday's season opener against Valdosta State.
Trailing 2-0 after halftime, the Lakers (0-1) scored twice in a two-minute span to draw even with the Blazers (1-0).
After a Valdosta foul was called inside the 18-yard box, Clayton State was awarded a penalty kick opportunity which was converted by
Isabel Massa. The Lakers' captain was able to slip the ball past the goalkeeper's right side for the first goal for Clayton State.
Just over a minute later,
Lois Beer connected with
Kamila Mroziewicz off a corner kick to tie the match and bring the Lakers right back into contention.
With just over three minutes left, Clayton State scored to go ahead 3-2, but a late call by the referee wiped out the goal and sent the match into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Blazers ended up on the winning side after a Valdosta forward was able to sneak past the back line and drill home the winner.
COMING UP:
- The Lakers will be back at Laker Field on Wednesday, Sept. 8 for a 1 p.m. matchup against Lincoln Memorial.
