MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State men's soccer team scored four first-half goals and raced past North Georgia 4-2 in Saturday's Peach Belt Conference matchup at Laker Field.
Â
North Georgia scored the game's opening goal in the seventh minute to take an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Lakers responded as
Alexis Iturria scored his first goal of the match just over five minutes later to tie the score. A nifty give-and-go with
Langston Blackstock helped tie the match at 1-1.
Â
Iturria was on the giving-end of the team's next goal as he and
Joe Conway faced a 2-on-1 situation with the North Georgia keeper. Conway buried the ball the ball to put Clayton State up 2-1.
Â
In the 31st minute,
Geo Rios recorded his seventh assist of the season off a corner kick, finding
Lewis Green who then found Iturria for the game-winning goal.
Â
Rios' seventh assist is tied for the most in all of NCAA and leads the PBC by two. Iturria has scored four of his five career goals in the last two games.
Â
Less than two minutes later, Iturria was fouled by the UNG goalkeeper in the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for the Lakers. Rios took the opportunity and drilled home the goal to give Clayton State a 4-1 lead with 13 minutes left in the half.
Â
Despite the score, the Lakers held a 14-11 shot advantage. Ten of Clayton State's shots were on target.
Â
The second half saw much less action as UNG scored the only goal in the half in the 56th minute.
Â
Theo Blachon made three saves in the win.
