MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 loss to Francis Marion on Monday evening in a Peach Belt Conference matchup.

Francis Marion (1-1-0, 1-1-0 PBC) set the pace early and had a chance to take the lead after a Clayton State (0-1-0, 0-1-0 PBC) handball 16 minutes into the game.

Standing just outside the 18-yard box, FMU's player opted for the shot and found the back of the net. Just as the Patriots started to celebrate, the center-referee waved it off and charged Francis Marion with a foul.

The Lakers weren't able to do much with the momentum change and took only five shots in the first half.

With under five minutes to play in the first half, Francis Marion scored the game's lone goal off a corner kick.

Freshman Reia Henry had a team-high two shots. Senior Ann-Cathrin Zabel had the only shot on goal for Clayton State.

The Patriots controlled most of the second half and outshot the Lakers 10-2.

Clayton State had a chance with 3 seconds left, but Zabel's shot sailed right into the keeper's hands.
