MORROW, Ga. – Freshman
Nyeemah Lucky scored twice on Monday evening to lead Clayton State to a 2-1 overtime win over USC Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer matchup.
With over four minutes remaining in the first overtime period,
Natalie Barbara played a brilliant ball to
Isabel Massa who found herself one-on-one with the keeper. Massa fired a shot, but the USC Aiken (0-1-0, 0-1-0 PBC) was able to get the save.
As soon as Barbara made the pass, Lucky started sprinting from the opposite side of the field, hoping to close the game. The diving save gave Lucky just enough time to collect the ball and scored the gamewinner.
Clayton State (1-1-0, 1-1-0 PBC) opened the game with a goal in the 15th minute. An Aiken foul on its defensive half gave
Ida Ditlevsen an opportunity to create some offense. The freshman could not have placed the ball any better as Lucky separated herself from her defender to head the ball in for the first goal of the game and her career.
The Pacers would answer less than 10 minutes later with a penalty klick in the 24th minute. After a Laker handball was called, Willa Olson tied the score after sneaking the ball past
Valentina Bonaiuto, who guessed the right way.
The two teams battled for the remainder of the game, each having several opportunities to score.
Lois Beer led Clayton State with four shots, three being on goal.
Reia Henry, Massa and Lucky each added two shots.
Bonaiuto made four saves in the win.
