Clayton State Holds On To Beat Francis Marion 77-75

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Clayton State women's basketball team earned its seventh victory of the season on Saturday with a 77-75 win over Francis Marion University in a Peach Belt Conference matchup.

Clayton State (7-2, 7-2 PBC) trailed 74-65 with 3:43 left on the clock but closed the game with a 12-1 run to escape Florence with the win. The Lakers took their final lead with 44 seconds remaining off a Jadah Waite jumper.

Francis Marion (0-6, 0-5 PBC) had a chance late but missed the open jumper.

Waite finished the game with a career-high 20 points and added three assists. Saturday marked the second game of the season that the freshman led the team in scoring.

The Lakers led 36-34 at halftime but were outscored 25-15 in the third quarter by the Patriots and trailed 59-51 after three quarters.

Audrey McElhaney chipped in 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Timi'a Swanson scored 17 and had six boards and a game-high four steals.

Clayton State jumped out to a 6-2 lead off back-to-back 3-pointers from Jada Francois Lubin and Waite and led 12-2 with just over seven minutes left in the opening quarter.

The Lakers would extend its lead to 19-6 with 3:23 on the clock, but the Patriots battled back and trailed 21-15 after the first.

The second quarter went the Patriots' way as they outscored the Lakers 19-15. After scoring the first five points and leading 26-15, Clayton State allowed an 8-0 run to FMU who cut the lead to three.

The two teams traded shots in the final 5:52 as the Lakers led 36-34 at the break.

COMING UP:
- The Lakers host No. 15 North Georgia on Wednesday (5:00 p.m.) and Columbus State on Saturday (1:30 p.m.).

TURNING POINT:
- The Lakers closed the game with a 12-1 run to steal the win.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- FMU's Lauryn Taylor had a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds.

NEWS AND NOTES:
- The Lakers are 8-2 in the last 10 matchups against Francis Marion.
- Clayton State had 29 turnovers, but added 41 points off the bench.
