MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's basketball team held off a second-half rally and defeated Georgia College, 75-63, in Wednesday's Peach Belt Conference matchup in The Loch.
Jessica Maye and
Audrey McElhaney scored the game's first eight points to give the Lakers (6-2, 6-2 PBC) an early 8-0 lead. The Bobcats (1-7, 1-7 PBC) would battle back throughout the first quarter, but Clayton State led 19-10 after the opening 10 minutes and for the remainder of the game.
McElhaney had eight of her 16 points in the first and pulled down five rebounds. She finished the game with nine boards. Maye scored a career-high 11 points and added six rebounds.
The second mirrored the first as the Lakers kept the offensive attack going, outscoring Georgia College 22-12.
A
Timi'a Swanson three at 8:22 started a 13-2 run to put Clayton State in a comfortable position for the remainder of the contest.
The Lakers would lead 41-22 at halftime.
Georgia College came out of the break with a mission to get back in the game, and they did just that. The Bobcats scored seven straight points to start the second half and trailed by only seven with just under three minutes left in the third.
The final frame was a free-throw showcase as both teams combined to take 25 attempts from the charity stripe. Georgia College went a perfect 8-for-8 while Clayton State shot 9-of-17.
The Bobcats kept up with the Lakers' pace though and were outscored by just one point in the quarter.
With 1:07 left to play, Georgia College trailed by six points, but the Lakers closed the game with a 6-0 run to pick up its sixth win of the season.
Freshman
Jadah Waite added 12 points in the win and had four assists and two steals.
Jada Francois Lubin scored nine points, had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
COMING UP:
- The Lakers hit the road for a game at Francis Marion on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3:00 PM
- Clayton State then returns home for a pair of games on Feb. 10 and 13.
TURNING POINT:
- The Lakers built a 21-point, first-half lead.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Georgia College's Harper Vick had a game-high 34 points and went 14-for-14 from the free throw line.

- Clayton State had 31 bench points and 36 points in the paint.
