AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Clayton State women's basketball team won its ninth game of the season after taking down Augusta 70-58 in Monday's Peach Belt Conference matchup.
The first half was a low scoring affair for both teams as the Lakers (9-4, 9-4 PBC) led 21-18 at halftime.
Clayton State jumped out to a 3-0 lead off a
Jada Francois Lubin 3-pointer and led for the entirety of the first quarter. The Lakers pulled ahead by five, but Augusta (5-7, 4-4 PBC) rallied back and trailed 13-11 after the first 10 minutes.
The Jaguars opened the second with a three and took their only lead of the game before the Lakers used a 10-0 run to lead 23-14 with just under three minutes left in the half.
A pair of Augusta jumpers closed the half as Clayton State led 23-18 at the break.
Coming off a four-point performance at Georgia College,
Audrey McElhaney scored 14 points and added a career-high 16 rebounds. The junior also had two assists and two steals.
Timi'a Swanson also helped lead the Lakers with her own 14 points.
The second half was the complete opposite of the first. Both teams scored more in the third quarter than they had in the entire first half.
Clayton State pulled ahead by 11 with 5:03 on the clock but the Jaguars clawed back and trailed by five with one quarter remaining.
As both teams battled, Augusta tied the game with 5:59 remaining, but was never able to take the lead as Clayton State used a 9-0 run to lead 63-54. After a Swanson bucket gave Clayton State a 65-57 lead, the Lakers closed the game with a 5-1 run with all five points coming off free throws.
Jonnise Poole tied a career-high with 10 points. Francois Lubin added nine points and six steals.
COMING UP:
- Clayton State returns home Wednesday for a senior day matchup against Young Harris. Gametime is set for 5:00 p.m.
- The Lakers are then scheduled to close out the regular season on Saturday with a trip to North Georgia.
