MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's soccer team needed 109:23 and four overtime periods but walked off Laker Field Saturday with a 1-0 win over Young Harris and secured a home quarterfinal matchup in next week's Peach Belt Conference title.
Tied 0-0 with just less than 40 seconds left in the match,
Moa Loftman delivered a ball into the box which found
Reia Henry for the golden goal.
Henry was able to stay onsides by less than a yard and made her move to right when the ball was delivered. The Brit then got a head on the ball and squeaked it by the keeper as the two made contact.
With the win, the Lakers secured fourth in the PBC standings and will face North Georgia on Saturday, Nov. 6. Gametime is TBD.
This the first time since 2012 the Lakers have finished the regular season ranked inside the top four of the PBC standings.
Prior to the match, Lakers' coach
Ross Henderson honored his six seniors:
Natalie Barbara,
Valentina Bonaiuto,
Marie Devillers,
Pia Haug,
Moa Loftman and
Isabel Massa.
Henry now has eight goals for the season and is tied for fourth in the conference.
The shutout is the third-straight for goalkeeper
Valentina Bonaiuto and her fifth of the season.
The game never favored one team for the first 109 minutes although the Lakers outshot Young Harris 17-10 and had nine on goal to the Mountain Lions' one.
